The following tutorial will guide you through setting up your FTP client properly for transffering files to your account. Some users forget to setup their FTP clients properly, which can result in being blocked by the server.

We will be using the open source FileZilla FTP ( http://filezilla-project.org ) client as an example, which we recommend as the best freely available FTP option. However, as a rule of thumb all FTP clients will have the same settings for controlling the following important settings:

1) Your Maximum "Simultaneous" or "Concurrent" transfers.

2) Your Maximum Uploads & Downloads.

You must be careful with these settings as they often default to "0" or Unlimiated. This means your FTP client will attempt to open as many connections as possible to the server and you risk a temporary or permanent IP block. Our servers are protected behind a firewall which will block an IP when more than 6 connections are attempted within a certain period.

Setting file permissions is one of the most common tasks involved in uploading files to your hosting account, especially if you are using various scripts, eg. installing scripts the old fashioned way without Fantastico!

CHMOD refers to the command line option for setting file permissions first used on Unix systems and widely in use today.

For everyday users setting file permissions has been made even easier and you can set permissions for files and directors from both your cPanel File Manager, and also with an FTP client such as FileZilla.

To access your account, use the details provided in your web hosting welcome email. If your domain name is not officially pointing to our servers yet, use the IP address and the Username which was sent to you in your welcome email.
